—James M. McPherson

“This collection tells a wonderful, thrilling, multi-dimensional, first-person story and should be in the bookshops of every Civil War, Lincoln, and Douglass site.”
—Leigh Fought
author of Women in the World of Frederick Douglass

“ Deeply moving, sometimes shocking, and sure to provoke deep reflection, Morel’s and White’s compilation is a service to students of the Civil War era and a model of editorial scholarship.”
